Counseling with a Clinical Intern

Counseling with a clinical intern offers a supportive and enriching experience, led by a graduate-level student who is in the final stages of their professional training. Clinical interns are carefully selected to align with the mission and vision of our group and receive close supervision from licensed clinicians throughout their work. While they are still developing their clinical skills, interns bring fresh perspective, deep commitment, and a strong desire to help. Sessions with an intern also provide quality care at a reduced cost, making therapy more accessible without sacrificing support or intention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "Clinical Intern?"

A clinical intern is a graduate student who is in the process of completing their advanced training to become a licensed mental health professional—such as a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC), social worker (LCSW), or marriage and family therapist (LMFT). Interns have already completed years of academic coursework and are now gaining hands-on experience by working directly with clients under the close supervision of a licensed clinician.

Interns are carefully chosen for their professionalism, empathy, and alignment with our practice’s mission and values. They are continually supported and evaluated to ensure they are providing safe, ethical, and effective care. Clinical interns at Moments Matter Therapy are held to the same professional standards as the rest of our team when it comes to showing up for their clients and completing essential clinical documentation. That said, interns carry a smaller caseload to honor the demands of their graduate programs—and to support their well-being outside of the therapy room, too.

What is the cost to work with a Clinical Intern?

Clinical interns are not eligible for insurance reimbursement, which means sessions with an intern cannot be billed to insurance. Because of this, we offer services with our interns at a significantly reduced private-pay rate.

At Moments Matter Therapy, we believe that high-quality mental health care should be accessible—not just for those who can afford full-fee services or who have the "right" insurance coverage. Offering sessions through our clinical interns allows us to reach more individuals and families who may not otherwise be able to access therapy. It's one of the ways we live out our mission of making care more inclusive, affordable, and supportive for our community.

What is it like working with a Clinical Intern?

Working with a clinical intern means you’re not just working with one provider—you’re actually benefiting from the support and insight of an entire team. Interns at Moments Matter Therapy receive weekly one-on-one supervision from a licensed site supervisor and are also supervised by a professor through their graduate program, who is a licensed clinical supervisor as well. These layers of guidance ensure interns are growing, supported, and delivering thoughtful, ethical care. All supervision discussions follow HIPAA regulations and are handled with the same confidentiality and care you’d expect in any therapeutic setting.

Interns are current graduate students, which means they’re deeply immersed in the latest research, clinical tools, and evidence-based practices. They bring a fresh perspective, strong motivation, and up-to-date training to their work with clients. Additionally, our interns are invited to join team consultations alongside other Moments Matter providers—giving them exposure to a variety of therapeutic frameworks and broadening their ability to meet clients’ unique needs with flexibility and compassion.

How are Clinical Interns reimbursed?

While clinical interns are not paid in the traditional sense for the sessions they provide, the reduced fee collected for their services directly supports our ability to offer this valuable program. This fee helps cover the behind-the-scenes costs that make intern services possible—such as our electronic health records system (EHR), the weekly clinical supervision interns receive from licensed professionals, and the additional training and resources we strive to provide.

By choosing to work with an intern, you’re not only receiving care—you’re actively supporting a model of accessible, community-centered mental health services. It’s a meaningful investment in your well-being and in a more connected, supported future for others, too.
